Talk on the streets (and by streets, we mean Canalys, Monitor Daily, and Digital Trends, not Mitchell Highway and Anson St) is that there will be a BIG demand for computers in 2025. This increased demand, estimated to be around a 4.3% boost in shipments, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC), is also linked to a potentially hefty price increase.
So, what in the world is going on and why is the market going haywire? Here are some of the contributing factors:
1. Windows 10 EOL
As we’ve previously mentioned, Microsoft announced that after 14th October 2025, they will no longer provide free software updates, tech support or security fixes for Windows 10.
To be compatible with Windows 11 Pro, computers need at least a 256GB solid-state drive, an Intel i5 processor (or higher and/or equivalent) and 16GB memory and be less than 5 years old. If your eyes glazed over reading this paragraph, don’t worry – we have already contacted you if you need to upgrade!
While Extended Security Updates will be available until October 2028, history has shown that this will likely be less cost-effective than migrating to newer PCs.
2. Demand for AI-enabled PCs
Businesses worldwide are racing to leverage AI to drive efficiency and get ahead of their competitors. These initiatives are driving sales of AI-capable devices with neural processing units (NPU) that can handle AI workloads at a low power consumption rate.
3. Pandemic purchases are ready for an upgrade
If you cast your mind back five years, Australia was busy gearing up for our very first COVID-19 lockdown. Businesses were scrambling to implement remote work options, and schools were prepping to deliver the bad news to millions of parents that they would be unexpectedly dipping their toes into homeschooling.
In 2025, all those laptops and PCs that families and businesses rushed out to buy are ready to be upgraded to a shiny new device.
4. The continuing trend towards remote and hybrid work
While our precious darlings are (mostly) back to their regular schooling schedule, many of us are still booting up the laptop at home a couple of days a week. This continuing trend has equated to an increased demand for all the associated equipment required – laptops, keyboards, headphones, monitors (not to mention cute little post-it notes) and more.
If you predict that you need to renew some of your company devices in 2025, our advice is to act sooner rather than later to avoid possible price hikes as the demand continues to grow. You can get in touch via sales@colton.com.au or on 02 6361 1116 for a quote.
